What are the types of SSL Certificate Validations and how long to they take?

The time it takes for issuance varies on the type of SSL Certificate purchased.

Domain Validation
This type of validation typically takes about two business days once approved by the owner. Domain Validation is the process in which the Certificate Authority (CA) contacts an administrator of the domain to make them aware of and approve the request.

Organization Validation
Organization Validations may take up to 3 business days once the owner has approved the request. This validation type requires the verification of domain ownership as well as the organization’s information included in the certificate, (name, city, state, and country).

Extended Validation
An Extended Validation Certificate (commonly referred as EV), may take up to 10 business day to be issued after the owner has approved the request. In these certificates, the domain, and organization information are verified as well as the company’s legal existence.

How do I know if I need an SSL Certificate on my site?

SSL Certificates are first and foremost an internet security measure. They encrypt data sent between servers and the visitors. If your site collects any information outside a standard contact form, you should have an SSL Certificate installed to protect that data. Some examples of data that requires encryption include sites that process their own payment information, any site that utilizes a login form or a site that collects other sensitive information (usernames, passwords, driver license numbers, full or partial social security numbers, or other identifiable information).

As part of our Terms of Service and Privacy Policies, if your website does not have an SSL Certificate installed and fits into one of the categories above, Centilia Web Services will notify you that an SSL Certificate is required. You are also welcomed to ask our support team to review your site to determine if you require an SSL Certificate.

Additionally, SSL Certificates do positively affect Google Search ratings to some degree.

What is required for an SSL Certificate?

An SSL Certificate requires a dedicated IP address associated with your domain. Dedicated IP addresses can be requested and are leased to our clients. To check if you already have a dedicated IP address associated with your domain or to request one, please submit a support request to us.

The domain validation step also requires some sort of administrative email contact. The specific email addresses are limited, however, organizations commonly utilize “admin@[yourdomain]” which is a valid contact. If this is not available, most Certificate Authorities also authorize the email associated with the Domain Registrant. Please note, the domain’s Administrative and Technical contacts are not valid options.

Does Centilia Web Services provide assistance with SSL Certificates?

Yes, do to the complexity of the installation process, Centilia Web Services will perform the installation. We do require email contact with your company to complete the installation. We also test and verify the installation after it is completed. The cost for SSL Certificate installation is a flat fee and is included at the time of checkout.
